Frequently asked questions about donating your vehicle

Should I donate my vehicle?

1. Is my car worth donating?
Most of the time, yes! but sometimes it depends.  You know what a rollercoaster the economy has been on the past several years.  If your car has major mechanical issues our volunteers and kids might not be able to fix them here, and scrap prices are so crazy low right now (seriously low!) that it would not help the ministry to accept some vehicles.  The best policy is just to call us and ask.  We would love to hear from you!

2. What will my deduction be worth?

We begin by checking the Kelley Blue Book value on a vehicle.  Our volunteer mechanics then adjust the sale price up or down depending on factors such as the amount of work that needs to be done on the vehicle and what amount it will likely bring in re-sale.  After the car has sold or by February of the next year, you will recieve a 1098-c tax receipt letter informing you of the selling price.  Note:  No car donation program should misrepresent themselves as setting a "definitive value" for you that cannot be challenged by the IRS. While we can help you identify a reasonable estimate, the final value reported is up to you to decide.

3. What if I can't find my title?
Getting a replacement title is actually pretty simple.  All you have to do is download this form: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/forms-documents/Documents/MV_DuplicateTitle_Reg_Cab_LienCard_Application.pdf.  Then fill it out and take it to your local License Center.  Our friends at the DMV are always happy to help!

4. How do I get my car to you?
For your convenience, we can come to you and pick it up for free.  Call us at (320) 251-8711 and we will make the arrangements for you!  In some cases, donors prefer to drop a car off rather than have someone come to their home.  That's great, too!  We can receive your donation in our office at 203 Cooper Ave N, Saint Cloud, MN 56303.

5. How is the YFC Wheels program different from other car donation programs?
YFC Wheels uses donated cars as a "learning lab" for students to gain job skills.  Kids work with adult mentors who teach them not only mechanic skills but life skills, as well.  After vehicles have been repaired, they are sold at a retail used car price.  On average, vehicles that are repaired and sold this way sell for 1-2 times more than they would have brought at an auction.  These two practices multiply the value of each donation in both dollars generated and services provided to kids from each car donated.  For a donor, this represents a greater return on the donation than a program that just re-sells donated cars at auction.

6. Will every car be repaired by the kids?
No, sometimes it turns out that a vehicle is not economically worth fixing and /or unsafe to re-sell.  In those instances the vehicles are used for parts and then recycled for scrap.  This is still a valuable contribution to us and maximizes each contribution for the overall program.
